FROG3D® Application - Signage / Themed Environments
For 15 years NancyScans has been in the digital imaging business providing wide format printing for artists, museums, galleries & corporations. Part of an affiliation of three companies all dedicated to the production and distribution of high quality photographic images & output, NancyScans’ corporate clients include Fujifilm USA, Olympus & SONY. Their work has been showcased in a number of high-end galleries & museums, highlighted by a 30 year retrospective project for artist Richard Prince that took over New York’s Guggenheim Museum in late 2007.
THE CHALLENGE
STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE
NancyScans knows wide format printing. They've become the go-to guys for a range of corporate and artistic clients across the US looking for top quality photographic images and output. Having firmly established themselves in the world of wide format printing and looking to grow their capabilities, NancyScans went looking for opportunities to further differentiate themselves and provide unique new products to their clients.
The possibility of adding 3D production to their repertoire – either as standalone products or in combination with their wide format printing products – was intriguing to NancyScans' CEO John Olson. He was certain that the ability to create custom-made 3D sculptures would allow them to offer their clients more robust and creative solutions. While this was the opportunity Olson was looking for, it also posed a significant challenge. With no experience in the world of 3D carving and sculpting, Olson realized that his company would need some serious help in building out their 3D capabilities. To get this help, Olson turned to Streamline Automation and the FROG3D® foam carving system.
THE SOLUTION
THE TURNKEY TO SUCCESS
With the FROG3D® system, NancyScans now has the 3D scanning, editing, machining and finishing capabilities they need to create eye-catching 3D projects. They're able to take their clients' ideas and design an end product in 2D, 3D or a combination of both – which has translated into more creative work and more business. NancyScans' first project using FROG3D® was a perfect example of these possibilities. A chocolate company approached NancyScans looking to spruce up their store. Instead of a conventional approach revolving around 2D graphics, NancyScans created a realistic 8 foot replica of a chocolate dessert, complete with faux cherries and chocolate sauce, which now sits in front of the store to attract customers. These 3D capabilities have given NancyScans a perfect complement to their 2D products, and also a serious advantage in the market.
While the FROG3D® system has given NancyScans new production capabilities, Olson's choice to go with FROG3D® went beyond the equipment's capabilities. "We were total novices to 3D," explains Olson, "so we chose FROG3D® because it was a turnkey solution. The equipment, training and support got us up and running immediately." As part of Streamline's standard training package, the NancyScans team was not only instructed on how to use the equipment, but also on the end-to-end production processes for the kind of products they wanted to create. From concept and design through quoting, production and finishing, Streamline was able to give NancyScans the knowledge they needed to take projects from start to finish and to integrate FROG3D® into their already successful business. For NancyScans this training meant a smooth and painless transition into their new production processes, allowing them to quickly start producing 3D products for their clients, despite being complete newcomers to 3D work.
In addition to the in-depth training program, Olson also gives high praise to the ongoing support his company has received from Streamline. With years of experience under their belts, NancyScans have experienced the full gamut of technology providers, but they've found Streamline's support to go beyond the norm. "Over the years, NancyScans has purchased millions of dollars of technology", he explains. "Every piece of hardware and software has come with ‘support'. However, once the purchase has been completed, the quality of support differs greatly from product to product. FROG3D® support ranks in the top 10% of all of our purchases." With the combination of industry-leading equipment and world class training and support, NancyScans has been able to launch themselves into the world of 3D without the growing pains that typically accompany this kind of change.
THE BENEFITS
THE FROG3D® ADVANTAGE
When Olson set out to further differentiate his business, a key goal was to grow his product offerings and take his product line beyond the conventional. His expectations were met – and then some. "Our offerings have totally changed with FROG3D® technology in our production facility", Olson says. In 2009 we grew our offerings by 40%. In 2010 we expect to bring a hybrid product to the market that will be our most significant offering in our 15 year history. None of this would have been possible without FROG3D® equipment, training and support."
Ultimately, by offering 3D products alongside wide format graphics and giving their clients a new range of options, NancyScans has been able to redefine how they do business during a time when other businesses in their industry are just trying to weather the economic storm. "Streamline Automation and FROG3D® have given us the ability to totally reinvent ourselves and grow our bottom line during very tough economic times. They've provided us with good equipment, good training and a turnkey solution that has allowed us to enter the 3D market quickly and not look back."
